E1 or F1 Error Code: brake sensor circuit fault

Last updated November 5, 2026

E1 and F1 are the same fault in the brake sensor circuit, reported at two moments: F1 when the power-on self-test fails, E1 when the fault appears during operation. Everything below applies to both.

F1 or E1 right after the brake lever reach was adjusted: if the code appeared when you turned the lever reach adjustment screw (to move the lever further from or closer to the grip), the magnet inside the lever is out of line with its brake cut-off sensor, so the controller reads the brake as always pressed. This is not a defect, and bleeding the brake or replacing parts will not fix it. Turn the reach screw back toward the factory position until the F1 or E1 clears and the lever returns freely, and keep the lever inside that range. If the code persists or the lever still sticks with the lever back at the factory position, follow the checks below.

Symptoms: E1 or F1 on the display, brake light flashing or staying on, mechanical brake works but regen braking may be intermittent or off, throttle may be inhibited while the error is active.

Cause: most commonly a damaged, pinched or disconnected brake lever or regen wire, often after handlebar adjustments or a fall (impact damage to the lever or connector, or a broken conductor near the lever pivot or cable exit).

First checks

  • If the code is F1 (it appeared at power-on): confirm the brake lever is fully released and not held or blocked by an accessory when the scooter is switched on, then power the scooter off and on again.

  • Inspect the brake lever and regen wires from lever to connector for kinks, cuts or exposed conductors.

  • Unplug and reseat the lever and regen connectors, checking for bent pins, moisture or corrosion, and clean if needed.

If you are unsure which component is faulty

"Temporarily disconnect one brake sensor at a time and power the scooter on. If the E1/F1 error clears, the disconnected component is the faulty one."

If there is visible wire damage, or the error persists after checking connections

  • Primary fix: replace the affected brake lever or regen unit.

  • Alternative: a DIY wire repair if they are experienced with electronics and the lever is otherwise intact.

  • Complex case: if several components are damaged, or E1 persists after replacements, replace the entire handlebar assembly.
