Why is my brake light always on and flashing when I brake?

Last updated November 5, 2026

On most Apollo scooters, it is normal for the rear light to stay on as a running light and then flash or change intensity when you brake. This is a built-in safety feature and, on many models, it cannot be turned off.

What you're seeing

  • Rear light stays on while riding: works as a constant tail light so others can see you from behind.

  • Light flashes or brightens when you brake: acts as an active brake light to signal that you are slowing down or stopping.

  • Legacy City and Air 2022 to 2023 in Eco mode (Walking Mode): the headlight turns on and the tail light flashes constantly. This is a safety regulation in Europe. Go into second gear to stop it.

Can you turn it off?

  • For many Apollo models, the rear running and brake light cannot be disabled through the display or app, by design, because it is treated as a safety feature.

  • On some older models, the button that turns the headlight on or off also switches the tail light. Check your model's manual in User Manuals.

If your scooter behaves like this from new, and the rear light stays on constantly while riding and flashes or brightens when you pull the brake, this behaviour is considered normal and not a defect.

When to be concerned

  • The light does not change at all when braking (no flashing or brightening).

  • The light is off completely even when the scooter is powered on.

  • The light flashes erratically or comes with other issues, such as error codes, wheels locking unexpectedly or regen stuck on.

In those cases, there could be a stuck brake sensor, a wiring issue, or a controller or firmware fault that needs diagnosis. If the lights do not power on, do not operate the scooter and contact support. If the display shows E1 or F1, follow E1 or F1 Error Code: brake sensor circuit fault.
