How to do motor detection (motor calibration): press the power button 10 times on the scooter, it cannot be started in the Apollo app

Last updated November 5, 2026

Motor detection, also called motor calibration or controller calibration, is started on the scooter itself. It cannot be started from the Apollo app: the app has no motor detection feature.

It applies to every Apollo scooter from 2022 onward, with a MACH controller or a non-MACH controller. It does not apply to legacy and discontinued models from before 2022.

When to do it

  • After a motor or a controller is replaced, so the two are in sync. Do not ride until it is done.

  • When a motor accelerates unevenly, brakes inconsistently, stutters, or works only some of the time.

Steps

Safety warning: never perform motor detection with the wheels in contact with the ground, as doing so may cause injury or damage.

  1. Put the scooter on a sturdy stand, box or chair with both wheels off the ground and nothing touching them.

  2. Power the scooter on.

  3. Right after it powers on, quickly press the power button 10 times in a row. Speed matters.

  4. After a short pause the motor spins on its own, loudly. On a dual motor scooter each motor spins once, one at a time. Then the scooter turns off. This is normal, and an E3 on the display while it runs is normal too.

  5. If nothing spins, power off and try again.

After it

A motor that does not spin during detection is the affected one. If both spin and the problem remains, follow "Motor struggling, stuttering, weak, cutting out or one motor not working: calibration and swap test to find motor or controller".

If problems persist, contact Apollo Support with your scooter model and serial number, a detailed description of the issue and the steps you've tried.
