Black goo, sealant or melted rubber leaking from the tire: Go, Dash, Explore 2.0 self-healing tires

Last updated November 5, 2026

Black goo, sealant, gel or "melted rubber" leaking or bursting out of a tire, often with the tire getting hot. Seen mostly on the Go, Dash and Explore 2.0 (self-healing tubeless tires).

  • The black material is the tire's self-healing sealant gel. It escapes when the scooter is ridden with very low tire pressure: under the rider's weight the tire flexes, the gel touches the warm motor, melts and seeps out.

  • This is a maintenance issue, not a manufacturing defect, so it is generally not covered under warranty.

  • Stop riding on that tire: once the sealant has leaked, the tire needs to be replaced. New tire for your model: see "Replacement tire or tire assembly for my scooter: which one to buy, sold out, Dash, Go, Go Stellar, City, Pro, Air, Explore 2.0, Phantom".

  • To clean: scrape off the excess, then wipe with 70 to 99% isopropyl alcohol, away from connectors.

How to avoid it:

  • Check the pressure every week and inflate to the PSI printed on the tire sidewall.

  • Use a pump with a gauge that reaches that pressure.

  • Never ride on a soft tire: stop and inflate first.

Adding sealant to a 12 x 3.00-6.5 tire: 4 to 5 fl oz (120 to 150 ml) of a standard scooter sealant (Slime, FlatOut, Armor-Dilloz). If a dosage calculator asks for the volume: about 205 cubic inches (3.3 L).
