How Long Does an Electric Scooter Last? What 1.1 Million Rides Show

Measured in miles, longer than most people will ever ride it. Here's what our fleet data says about electric scooter battery life, and why most scooters stop for a reason that has nothing to do with wear.

The short answer

A well-built electric scooter lasts longer than most people ride it. In Apollo's fleet data, batteries showed no measurable range loss through 2,500 miles (4,000 km), about six years of typical riding. Most scooters stop being ridden long before they wear out.

Search "how long does an electric scooter last" and the answer you'll mostly find is two or three years, or a few hundred charges and then it's done.

We have the data to check that. So we did. And the most interesting thing we found isn't about batteries at all.

Meet the 18,587-mile Phantom

One 2023 Apollo Phantom in Miami has done 18,587 miles (about 29,900 km). That's three quarters of the way around the planet. Nothing on it has been replaced under warranty, it still gets the range a normal Phantom gets, and it's still out riding.

That's roughly 740 full charges' worth of riding. Many lithium-ion packs are rated for somewhere around 500 to 1,000 cycles, so this scooter is well into the range where you'd expect to see wear. It isn't showing any.

Why we measure scooter lifespan in miles, not years

Someone who rides twice a month and someone who commutes daily will never get the same answer in years. So we measured in miles.

How we measured it

49,837 scooters connected to the Apollo app, 1.1 million rides since August 2021. For battery health, each scooter is compared only with itself when it was new: same rider, mild weather, similar speed and trip length. Range is distance per percent of battery on real roads, not in a lab.

How long does an electric scooter battery last?

The battery is the most expensive part, so we started there.

Mileage Range vs. when new Scooters measured
1,000 mi (1,600 km) 100% 851
2,500 mi (4,000 km) 99% 188

A typical active rider covers about 400 miles (640 km) a year. That makes 2,500 miles roughly six years of riding with no range loss we can measure.

One honest asterisk: time on its own does cost a little. Scooters two to three years old had about 5% less range than newer ones at the same mileage. Small, but it's there.

We do have a few dozen scooters past 5,000 miles (8,000 km), and they look the same as the rest. There just aren't enough of them yet to call it a result.

Why do people stop riding their electric scooters?

If batteries hold up, why do so many scooters end up in a garage? This is the part that surprised us most.

Most scooters simply don't get ridden much. The typical scooter in our fleet has done about 164 miles (264 km) total. Only about one in nine has passed 1,000 miles.

If scooters were wearing out, the high-mileage ones would be dropping off first. It's the opposite:

60%of scooters past 5,000 mi (8,000 km) were ridden in the last 3 months
16%of scooters under 100 mi (160 km) were
17% vs 15%contacted support before going quiet vs. still riding

The scooters that get ridden keep getting ridden. The ones that stop, stop early. And it doesn't look like they stop because something broke: scooters that went quiet were about as likely to have contacted support in their last two months as those still on the road.

We can't see what happens next. Sold, parked, or ridden without the app open. But the pattern is clear: most scooters don't wear out. They get parked.

The real question isn't "will this scooter last?" It's "will I keep riding it?" And that comes down to fit: your commute, where you'll keep it, and whether you can actually ride it where you live.

If you're still choosing, our guide to the best electric scooters of 2026 breaks it down by commute type.

Electric scooter battery myths: what actually matters

We expected to find habits that kill batteries. So we tested the four you hear about most. Up to 2,500 miles, none made a difference we could measure.

Does charging to 100% ruin an electric scooter battery?

We compared riders who charge to full most of the time with riders who don't. No measurable difference in range.

Does riding in the fastest mode wear out the battery?

Same test, same result. Riders who spend most of their time in the top mode kept their range just as well.

Does leaving a scooter unused kill the battery?

Scooters that sat for a month or more showed no measurable difference, though we still recommend storing at about 75% rather than empty.

Does heat damage electric scooter batteries?

Riders who did a lot of riding above 86°F (30°C) showed no measurable difference either.

That doesn't mean these habits never matter. Over enough years, the chemistry says they will. But you don't need to baby your scooter.

How to make your electric scooter last longer

  • Ride it. The single biggest predictor of a scooter's life in our data is whether it gets used.
  • Keep it dry. Store it indoors and wipe it down after wet rides.
  • Keep the tires pumped up. It protects range and the tires themselves.
  • Store it at about 75%. If you're putting it away for a while, don't leave it empty.
  • Mind the cold. Winter costs range temporarily, not permanently. Read our cold-weather study.

How to tell if an electric scooter will last before you buy

Here's our advice for any brand, not just ours. Before you buy, look up what a replacement battery costs, and whether you can actually buy one. If a company won't tell you, assume the scooter isn't really meant to be fixed.

On our site, replacement batteries  run from about US$219 to US$799.99, depending on the model. We keep parts available for at least two years after a model stops selling. In practice, you can still buy a battery and tires for a 2021 Apollo City today.

A scooter that lasts isn't one where nothing ever goes wrong. It's one where, when something does, you can fix it and keep riding.

So, how long does an electric scooter last?

Measured in miles, longer than most people will ever ride it. Batteries aren't what usually ends a scooter's life. Parking it is. So buy one you'll actually ride, and make sure you can fix it when you need to.

Frequently asked questions

How long does an electric scooter last?

In Apollo's data from 49,837 scooters, batteries showed no measurable range loss through 2,500 miles (4,000 km). At a typical 400 miles a year, that's about six years of riding. Most scooters stop being ridden well before they wear out.

How long do electric scooter batteries last?

Apollo scooters kept 100% of their original range at 1,000 miles and 99% at 2,500 miles. Age alone costs a little: scooters two to three years old had about 5% less range than newer ones at the same mileage.

Does charging an electric scooter to 100% damage the battery?

Up to 2,500 miles, Apollo found no measurable difference in range between riders who usually charge to full and those who don't.

How many charge cycles does an electric scooter battery last?

Many lithium-ion packs are rated for roughly 500 to 1,000 full cycles. One Apollo Phantom has done about 740 full charges' worth of riding with no loss in range.

Can you replace an electric scooter battery?

It depends on the brand. Apollo sells replacement batteries for its models and keeps parts available for at least two years after a model stops selling. Check battery availability before you buy any scooter.

How do I make my electric scooter battery last longer?

Keep it dry, keep the tires inflated, avoid charging below freezing, and store it at about 75% charge if it'll sit for a while.

About the data. 49,837 Apollo scooters and 1.1 million rides, August 2021 to October 2026. Battery range is measured per scooter against its own early rides in mild weather at similar speed and trip length. We only see scooters whose owners use the Apollo app, and a small number of odometers were reset by repairs or software updates, so real-world mileage is likely higher than shown. Habit comparisons use 95% intervals; "no measurable difference" means every interval spans zero. Data as of October 8, 2026.
